The Valkenberg Hermitage
The
Valkenberg Hermitage operates as a not-for-profit project space and quarterly
publication devoted to providing consecrated ground for the tremendous and humbling
from all trades, practices, sciences, and cultures. We house temporary holy-sites
and enshrine objects, sounds, ideas, and projects that provoke and inspire.
We triumph the exceptional within the lives of everyday people and wish to unveil
the tangible and intangible heritages of the world within the full framework
of their indigenous traditions.
Be
they charting new frontiers or adhering to age-old customs, we support individuals,
groups, and ideas that wholly engage us. Precedence is given to the fanatical,
the obsessive, the spiritual, the neglected, the marginalized, whilst the more
renowned are reexamined and recontextualized. We praise the clock-maker, the
political prisoner, the quilter, the street-musician, the physicist, the saboteur,
the child, the martial artist, the luthier, the medium, the recluse, the anthropologist…
Since,
assuredly, the most inspiring things are spread like scattered ash across the
globe, we intend to explore, search-out, and delineate these threads, weaving
together the ghost stories, the origins of dreams, and the time signatures of
every culture. We begin within our means, branching out and out to create a
network, from disparate walks of life, within which we can present, exchange,
and combine ideas, stories, and methods while constructing our own traditions.
The Valkenberg Hermitage is based in Berlin, a hub from which we hope to shed new light and deserved attention upon these entities.
